Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have successfully thwarted a kidnap attempt along the Igarra–Ibillo Highway, rescuing several traders returning from the Ibillo Market without any harm.

According to a statement by the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Moses Yamu, the operation was launched after a distress call was received on Friday, October 17, 2025.

The Divisional Police Officer of Igarra reportedly mobilized his men, supported by the Command’s Operation Rescue Team, to the scene. Upon arrival, the suspected kidnappers opened fire on the officers but were swiftly overpowered in a fierce exchange. The armed men later escaped into the nearby forest, abandoning their captives.

“All victims were rescued unhurt, while a manhunt is ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects,” Yamu confirmed.

In a separate operation, officers of the Jattu Division rescued a 12-year-old girl, Blessing Anani, who had been abducted by gunmen. The rescue followed coordinated efforts by police operatives, local vigilantes, and hunters, who trailed a family member of the victim, Sunday Idornigie, as he attempted to deliver ransom money around the Agenebode area.

During the operation, one of the kidnappers allegedly attacked Idornigie with a machete before the security team intervened. The confrontation led to an exchange of gunfire, resulting in the death of one suspect, while others escaped into the forest with injuries.

“The rescued victim was unharmed, while her relative, who sustained machete cuts, is receiving treatment,” Yamu stated.

Police recovered a blood-stained machete from the scene as investigations continue to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

Commending the efforts of the officers, Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika praised their professionalism and collaboration with community security outfits. He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly to help sustain the Command’s progress against kidnapping and other crimes.
