The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed reports claiming it sought a court order to halt the planned #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest, labeling such claims as false and misleading.
Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, clarified on Sunday via his X account, urging media outlets to uphold objectivity in their reporting.
Hundeyin emphasized that the police never approached any court to stop the protests, stating, “Our media houses need to be objective. At no point did the police seek to stop protests. It is an inalienable right of Nigerians.”
He also debunked reports of a case adjournment to Tuesday, calling them “entirely false” and based on “one-sided narration, not investigative journalism.”
The statement followed an online news outlet’s claim that the police had sought a court order in Abuja to block the demonstrations.
Hundeyin reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to protecting citizens’ constitutional right to peaceful assembly while ensuring public safety and order.
Authorities stressed that lawful protests are permitted under Nigeria’s constitution and warned that misrepresenting the police’s stance undermines public trust and responsible journalism.
