Police Arrest INEC Officials With N2.5m Cash In Ogun


The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) alongside their driver for alleged electoral misconduct during the Remo Federal Constituency by-election.

The Command’s spokesperson, CSP Omolola Odutola, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday in Abeokuta.

According to Odutola, the suspects were apprehended in Iperu Remo during police surveillance of the election exercise. She explained that around 12:45 a.m., a patrol team from the Iperu Remo Division intercepted a Mitsubishi Space Wagon with registration number AKD 887 HT, conveying three occupants.

She further revealed that the INEC officials and their driver were arrested after a search on the vehicle led to the discovery of ₦2.5 million in cash.

“During interrogation, he confessed that the money was collected at Kehoy Hotel, Iperu, from a man he referred to as ‘Political Solution’, acting on the directive of his supervisor,” Odutola stated.

The police spokesperson also confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, had directed that the suspects be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, for a discreet investigation.

Odutola assured members of the public that police monitoring of the by-election remains active and that updates on the outcome of the investigation will be made available in due course.
