The United Nations Security Council will convene an emergency session at Poland’s request to address what Warsaw has described as an unprecedented violation of its airspace by suspected Russian drones, the Polish Foreign Ministry confirmed on Thursday.
The move follows Wednesday’s dramatic incident in which Polish forces, backed by NATO allies, shot down drones that strayed into the territory of the European Union and NATO member state.
“We are drawing the world’s attention to this unprecedented Russian drone attack on a member of the UN, EU, and NATO,” Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told local radio. He added that Poland has presented its case to the Council before and believes its arguments remain compelling.
Moscow, however, denied responsibility for the breach. A senior Russian diplomat in Poland claimed the drones entered from the direction of Ukraine, where Russia has waged a full-scale war since its 2022 invasion. Russia’s Defence Ministry acknowledged conducting a large-scale drone assault on Ukrainian military targets in the country’s west but insisted no strikes had been aimed at Poland.
The incident has heightened concerns about the war spilling beyond Ukraine’s borders, further testing NATO’s collective security commitments.
