Plateau Govt Urges Creation Of State Police To Strengthen Community Safety

The Plateau State government has renewed its appeal for the establishment of a state policing structure, citing unique security challenges that require localized solutions.

The statement was made on Thursday, by the State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap, during a live programme on Dr Fish FM, Jos.

Ramnap reiterated Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s position that state police would serve as a complement to federal security agencies, helping to address threats more effectively at the grassroots level.

“While we continue to collaborate with federal security agencies, creating a state police system will help bring security closer to our communities,” she said.

She emphasized that the peculiar realities in Plateau State demand tailored responses.

“The security challenges in our state require a system that can respond promptly and efficiently.

“Establishing a state police system remains a viable option to ensure peace and safety, particularly in our rural communities,” Ramnap added.

The Commissioner assured that the state government is committed to strengthening security through the deployment of personnel, enhanced community vigilance, and continuous engagement with stakeholders.

“We are also investing in community policing initiatives and early warning mechanisms to prevent crimes before they occur,” she noted.

Ramnap urged residents to support ongoing reforms. “We call on all citizens to cooperate with security agencies, report suspicious activities, and participate in neighborhood safety programs.

“Together, we can consolidate peace and stability across Plateau State,” she said.
