Former presidential candidate and Labour Party leader, Peter Obi, paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, in Lagos on Friday, August 22, 2025.
The visit came weeks after Rufai’s passing on July 3, 2025, at the age of 61, following a prolonged illness.Obi, accompanied by a small entourage, was received warmly by the Rufai family at their Lagos residence.
Photos from the visit captured moments of shared grief and support, with Obi consoling family members and paying tribute to the football legend’s contributions to Nigerian sports.
The former Anambra State governor expressed deep admiration for Rufai’s illustrious career, noting his pivotal role in Nigeria’s success at the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cup tournaments and the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations victory.
“Peter Rufai was a true hero of Nigerian football, a man whose talent and dedication inspired millions. His legacy will forever remain in our hearts,” Obi said during the visit.
He also called for greater recognition and support for Nigeria’s sports heroes, echoing sentiments recently raised by former Super Eagles defender Taribo West, who criticized the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Lagos State Government for allegedly neglecting Rufai’s family during their time of need.
