Former Nigerian presidential candidate, Peter Obi denounced vote-buying as a grave danger to Nigeria’s democracy, labeling it a calculated act of corruption.
The former Anambra governor in a post on X, condemned vote buying and revealed reasons why politicians engage in the act.
He said; “Those who buy votes do so with one intention—to gain access to public funds,” Obi wrote, warning that such politicians are “looters, not leaders.”
He argued that vote-buying diverts resources meant for essential services like schools, hospitals, roads, and jobs, robbing the nation of dignity and development.
Obi also addressed voters, stating, “When you sell your vote, you are not just selling a ballot—you are selling your future.”
He cautioned that accepting bribes trades away opportunities for education, healthcare, and employment, mortgaging tomorrow for temporary gain.
Emphasizing the power of the ballot, Obi noted that the millions spent on vote-buying underscore its immense value.
“The real power lies in your conscience, your courage, and your vote,” he declared.Urging Nigerians to reject the politics of bribery, Obi called for electing leaders committed to service over personal gain.
“We either keep selling our votes and remain trapped in poverty and bad governance, or we rise above temporary gain and reclaim the future of our nation,” he stated.
