Peter Obi committed to coalition, join him —ADC replies Datti Baba-Ahmed

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed recent
remarks from Datti Baba-Ahmed, the 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the
Labour Party (LP), describing them as his personal opinion.

During a Channels Television interview, Baba-Ahmed had
surmised that the opposition coalition under the ADC platform is “deceiving
Nigerians”.

He also disclosed his intention to run alongside Peter Obi
in the 2027 general election.

Jackie Wayas, ADC deputy national publicity secretary, said
in a statement on Saturday that Baba-Ahmed’s position does not reflect the
stance of the party or its coalition partners.

“Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed is a respected voice who has
always stood for integrity and justice, and since the coalition is a collective
effort that requires the strength and skills of all patriots, we sincerely hope
he comes on board to contribute to this shared vision for a better Nigeria,”
the statement reads.

Wayas said the coalition was formed after wide consultations
among seasoned leaders like Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president; Nasir
el-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna; David Mark, former senate president; Rauf
Aregbesola, former governor of Osun; Rotimi Amaechi, former minister of
transportation; and Obi.

“His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi has publicly affirmed his
dedication to the coalition and the adoption of ADC as the platform for the
2027 elections,” the statement added.

“In a public statement on July 3, 2025, Mr. Obi declared and
I quote: ‘Yesterday, the coalition members formally adopted the African
Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 Nigeria General Elections… Our
commitment is to sacrifice and work together towards the 2027 General
Elections, ensuring that Nigeria gets a competent, capable, and compassionate
leadership that will prioritise the nation’s future by putting the welfare of
Nigerians first’.”

She said the coalition prioritises national interest over
partisan divides and is committed to delivering competent and compassionate
leadership.

Wayas said the ADC remains focused on uniting the opposition
to rescue the country from hardship.

“Nigerians deserve clarity and unity in the pursuit of a
better future. Let us rally behind the ADC and rescue Nigeria,” she added.
