The Federal Civil Service Pensioners branch of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) have threatened to occupy the streets of cities across the country on October 1 to protest non- implementation of the N32, 000 pension increase.
The pensioners are angry that the federal government has since implemented the N70, 000 national minimum wage to workers but yet to do the same on the N32, 000 increase promised them.
In a statement in Abuja, Thursday, the national president of the Federal Civil Service Pensioners branch of NUP, Comrade Frederick Eguaoba, stated that despite the presidential approval of the release of N58 billion recently for the implementation of the increase, the Federal Ministry of Finance and Office of the Accountant General of the Federation were yet to comply.
“The pensioners are bitter because the federal government is demanding the immediate release of the N58 billion approved by President Ahmed Tinubu to ensure full compliance and implementation of the pension increase for all federal pensioners and payment of the accumulated 7-8 months arrears owed them.
“We have given the government a two- week dateline to meet our demands or we stage a massive protest across the country,” he stated.
He stated further that the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) should follow up and ensure immediate and prompt release of the approved funds by the finance ministry and accountant general office.
