A male pedestrian lost his life on Sunday following a hit-and-run incident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, just after the Ogudu flyover bridge toward Ifako. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) quickly intervened to apprehend the driver involved.
According to LASTMA, the driver of a Nissan Jeep, with registration number KJA 354 ET, attempted to overtake a heavily loaded forty-foot articulated container truck at high speed, losing control in the process. The vehicle subsequently collided with a pedestrian before veering into the expressway’s central median.

Rather than providing assistance, the motorist attempted to flee the scene. However, LASTMA officers stationed along the expressway intercepted and detained him while coordinating rescue efforts and medical evacuation for the pedestrian, who later succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital.
In a statement, Adebayo Taofiq, director of public affairs and enlightenment at LASTMA, confirmed that the suspect was handed over to the Ogudu Police Division, whose personnel assisted in rescue operations. The mangled vehicle was also removed and taken to the police division for further investigation.
The accident occurred close to ongoing rehabilitation works at the Ogudu–Ifako bridge intersections. Despite the construction activities, LASTMA officers ensured smooth traffic flow and prevented any secondary incidents or congestion.
Olalekan Bakare-Oki, general manager of LASTMA, highlighted the dangers of excessive speeding, reckless overtaking, and hazardous driving, emphasizing that such behaviour poses severe risks to both drivers and pedestrians.
He urged motorists to exercise extreme caution and prioritize road safety before attempting overtaking or diversionary maneuvers. Bakare-Oki reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to enforcing traffic regulations and maintaining order across Lagos State highways.
