On Monday, August 25, 2025, a lively group of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) supporters gathered outside the party’s 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, waving flags and displaying posters endorsing Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde as the PDP’s presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.
The enthusiastic crowd, including youths and party loyalists from across Nigeria, chanted slogans and held banners reading “Seyi Makinde for President 2027” and “Makinde: Nigeria’s Future.”
Their demonstration highlighted strong grassroots support for Makinde, boosted by the PDP’s decision to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South.
The NEC meeting, held at the PDP’s Legacy House campaign office, focused on zoning policies and preparations for the party’s National Elective Convention set for November 15-16, 2025, in Ibadan, Makinde’s home state.
The choice of Ibadan is seen as a strategic advantage for Makinde amid his rivalry with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.
Aisha Ibrahim, a supporter, told journalists that Makinde’s achievements in Oyo State, including improvements in infrastructure and healthcare, make him the ideal candidate to address Nigeria’s challenges.
“Governor Makinde has proven he can lead. Nigeria needs his vision,” she said.
PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba described the NEC meeting as “productive,” confirming the ratification of the convention timetable.
He avoided commenting on the pro-Makinde rally but emphasized the party’s commitment to internal democracy.
