The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum has issued a stern warning to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and others, urging them not to disrupt the party’s national convention scheduled for November 15, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The governors, meeting in Gusau, Zamfara State, on Saturday, August 23, 2025, reaffirmed their unwavering support for the resolutions of the party’s 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in July 2025, which set the date and venue for the convention.
In a communiqué released after their 7th meeting, chaired by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, the governors emphasized the PDP’s role as Nigeria’s “only democratic institution and viable alternative” for restoring good governance and national development.
They urged party members to resist any attempts by “anti-party forces” to derail the convention, accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of divisive governance that has deepened public hardship.
The warning comes amid tensions fueled by Wike’s public dissatisfaction with the PDP National Working Committee’s (NWC) decisions, particularly the formation of the South-South Caretaker Committee and the retention of Ali Odefa as National Vice Chairman (South East).
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on August 19, 2025, Wike insisted that the zonal congress in Calabar, which elected his ally Chief Dan Orbih as National Vice Chairman (South-South), must be recognized, warning that failure to do so could spark a fresh crisis.
He also rejected the zoning committee led by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri and dismissed the legitimacy of the Ibadan convention, claiming it lacked formal NEC approval.
The governors’ forum, however, stood firm, commending PDP members for resisting orchestrated defections and maintaining grassroots support despite high-profile exits, including former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and others to the APC and African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The meeting also addressed national issues like insecurity and the erosion of democratic values, reinforcing the party’s commitment to rescuing Nigeria from what they described as APC’s mismanagement.
PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba countered Wike’s claims, asserting that all NEC members, including Wike, were duly notified of the convention plans through personalized letters and public notices in national dailies.
“The NEC has fixed the venue for the national convention in Ibadan, and all committees are working seamlessly toward a successful event,” Ologunagba said, emphasizing the party’s adherence to its constitution and zero tolerance for disloyalty.
