PDP convention kicks off as Bala Mohammed, Dauda Lawal, Fintiri arrive venue

Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo state, has arrived at the
venue of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention.

The convention to elect new national working committee (NWC)
members of the major opposition party is taking place at the Adamasingba
Stadium in Ibadan, Oyo state capital.

Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi; Ahmadu Fintiri, governor
of Adamawa; Dauda Lawal, governor of Zamfara; and Umar Damagum, PDP national
chairman, are among the top party figures who arrived alongside Makinde.

Ladi Adebutu, Ogun state governorship candidate of the PDP
in 2023; Natasha Akpoti, the senator representing Kogi central; Babangida
Aliyu, former governor of Niger; Kabiru Turaki, a former minister and the
consensus candidate for national chairman, are also in attendance.

Ademola Adeleke, the Osun state governor, and Agbu Kefas,
the Taraba governor, have yet to show up at the convention venue.

The proceedings kicked off around 3:45pm, with Damagum
delivering the opening remarks.

The gathering marks one of the party’s biggest assemblies
ahead of its internal restructuring and leadership rejig.

There were several attempts to prevent the convention from
taking place, with different party factions securing conflicting court
judgments.

In August, the PDP national executive committee (NEC) zoned
its presidential ticket to the south.

Per party tradition, the national chairman is expected to
come from the north.
