Pay Rise For Politicians Could Spark Anger – APGA Founding Chair, Okorie Warns

Founding National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chekwas Okorie, on Wednesday, condemned any attempt to increase the salaries of political office holders.

He described such a move as “insensitive” and likely to trigger public anger.

Okorie’s comments came in response to a proposal by the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to review upwards the emoluments of politicians.

He argued that Nigerians are already grappling with economic hardships stemming from policy decisions made by those in power.

He added that raising political salaries at this time would amount to mocking the suffering of citizens.

Speaking further, the APGA leader said, “What RMAFC is saying is that, as a commission, it is insensitive to the feelings of Nigerians who are bearing the brunt of the policy choices of politicians.

“The hunger and anger in the land is seen and felt by almost everyone. They should not be talking about increasing the pay of political office holders; in fact, they should be talking about a downward review.”

Okorie also warned that ignoring the plight of ordinary citizens could have political consequences.

He added, “Leaders who prioritize their personal gains over the welfare of the people risk losing the trust and confidence of Nigerians. Public service is about responsibility, not enrichment.”

He further urged policymakers to show empathy, saying, “The government must remember that millions of Nigerians are struggling to put food on the table.

“Any move to raise salaries now sends the wrong signal and could ignite public resentment.”
