‘Pasuma received it in 2018’ — X users debate Obi’s Georgia honorary citizenship

The honorary citizenship conferred on Peter Obi, former
presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), by the state of Georgia in the
United States, has generated varied reactions on the microblogging platform X.

On Friday, Obi announced the honorary citizenship via X,
following his participation in the Black Congressional Week events in Washington,
DC.

“Finally, the highlight of the day was the conferment of
Honorary Citizenship of Georgia on me by the State of Georgia,” Obi wrote.

The development elicited varied reactions from supporters of
the former Anambra governor and his critics.

An X user — @afrisagacity — said the honorary citizenship
shows that Obi is a “distinguished global figure with a respectable portfolio”.

“More interestingly, this is coming at a time when Tinubu,
Nigeria’s President, is said to have avoided the UNGA 2025, held in New York,
because of severed diplomatic relations with the U.S. over his “bad reputation
record” in the country. The power of a good name,” the X user wrote.

Countering the comment of @afrisagacity, some X users argued
that some Nigerians have been conferred the honorary citizenship of the state
of Georgia in the past and that it is not a big deal.

They said Wasiu Alabi, the Fuji singer better known as
Pasuma, received the honorary citizenship of the state of Georgia in 2018.

In July, Lilian Nneji, a Nigerian gospel singer, was
conferred the honorary citizenship of the state of Georgia.

In 2023, Davido, award-winning Nigerian singer, was
recognised as an “Outstanding Global Citizen” by the state of Georgia.

Responding to @afrisagacity, @Onsogbu wrote: “Pasuma collect
am since 2018.”
