The Oyo State House of Assembly has officially renamed the First Technical University, Ibadan to Ajimobi Technical University, following the passage of a bill that sailed through its third reading.

Chairman of the Committee on tertiary institutions, Hon. Oluwafemi Fowokanmi, emphasised the significance of this legislative move, stating that it will grant the institution access to the same benefits enjoyed by other state-owned universities.

Fowokanmi highlighted that the institution’s funding primarily comes from local government scholarship payments and its internally generated revenue.

He underscored that the renaming to Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Ibadan reaffirms its status as a state-owned tertiary institution, thus granting it access to government subventions like other similar institutions in the state.

The lawmaker further explained that this decision will facilitate the university’s enrolment process through the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and will contribute to reducing tuition fees, thereby enabling more indigenous students to pursue admission.

This development comes after Governor Seyi Makinde forwarded a letter to the House of Assembly, seeking the repeal of the law establishing the institution and proposing the change of name to Ajimobi Technical University, Ibadan, aligning its governance structures with those of other state-owned institutions.
