Oyo state Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, Sunday, said the government is set to sanction about 20 waste management consultants.
Mogbonjubola after a meeting with consultants in Ibadan threatened that about 20 waste management consultants had failed to honour the terms of agreement with the government to dispose of refuse in the state.
The commissioner added that the government’s aim of contracting the collection of waste in the state was to ensure a clean environment for the residents but expressed disappointment that for months, some of the waste management consultants did not keep to the terms of agreement, as dirt litters major streets in Ibadan.
He hinted that Oyo state government has initiated a comprehensive review and renewal of the waste management consultant’s contract to ensure improved service delivery and compliance with environmental regulations.
The commissioner added that the review process, held on Thursday and Friday at the Ministry’s Conference Room, Secretariat, Ibadan, aims to assess the consultant’s performance, identify areas for improvement, and enhance the efficiency of waste management services across the state.
He stated that the evaluation focuses on key performance indicators, including operational efficiency, financial compliance, regulatory adherence, innovation, sustainability, and transparency and that the ” review is not a witch-hunt but a necessary step to ensure that public concerns are addressed and service delivery is optimised to oversee the process even as a mini-committee was set up to conduct a thorough assessment.
“Upon completion, the ministry will decide whether to extend the contract under revised terms or renegotiate it to improve performance,” he said.
The commissioner added: “But I must say that I am disappointed in the low performance of the waste contractors because for the last two months waste continued to pile on the roads with nobody coming to evacuate them. If things continue this way, we will have no option but to revoke the contracts.”
Reiterating Oyo state government’s commitment to modernising waste management through innovative solutions such as smart waste bins, digital monitoring systems, and expanded recycling initiatives to complement the consultant’s efforts, the commissioner called on residents of the state to be patient, adding that all piles of refuse would soon be cleared.
