Over 545 Households Displaced As Torrential Rainfall Destroys 171 Houses In Kaduna

No fewer than 545 households have been rendered homeless after two days of heavy downpour submerged communities in Kaduna North Local Government Area of Kaduna State, leaving 171 houses damaged.

The Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA), Usman Mazadu, confirmed the development in a statement issued in Kaduna on Tuesday.

Mazadu explained that the agency, in collaboration with other stakeholders, carried out a joint assessment of the affected communities to determine the scale of destruction and coordinate emergency response.

He noted that the rainfall, which lasted between September 4 and September 5, was so severe that emergency responders had to move beyond evaluation to immediate evacuation in several areas as floodwaters submerged homes and property.

According to him, the multi-agency assessment team comprised the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Christian Aid, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Nigeria Red Cross, and the Kaduna State Fire and Public Safety Agency.

Mazadu disclosed that the Kigo Road community was the worst affected, with 69 buildings and 276 households inundated by floodwaters. He added that a private nursery and primary school, Merits Kids Academic School, was also affected by the disaster.

“In Rifin Guza, an overflowing river submerged several houses, while other communities affected include Shooting Range, Kabala Costain, Bashama Road in Tudun Wada, and Ungwan Rimi, where a connecting bridge to Libreville Road was washed away. Malali G.R.A was also impacted,” he stated.

He stressed that the assessment was necessary to guide government intervention and ensure relief reaches those in dire need.

“We are documenting every affected household to ensure relief reaches those who need it most. Our priority is to provide temporary shelter, food, and medical support for displaced residents,” Mazadu assured.
