A devastating tanker explosion along the Essa axis of the Agaie–Bida Road in Niger State on Tuesday afternoon has left multiple people feared dead and triggered severe traffic congestion on the major highway.
Hajiya Aishatu Sa’adu, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Niger State, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
While the exact casualty figure remains unconfirmed, FRSC personnel are actively conducting rescue operations at the scene. Sa’adu noted that the deplorable condition of the road hampered response efforts and exacerbated the traffic gridlock on the busy expressway.
The Agaie–Bida–Lapai road has a history of deadly accidents. In a similar tragedy last year, a head-on collision between a petrol tanker and a truck carrying travelers and cattle from Wudil, Kano State, killed 48 people.
The victims, burnt beyond recognition, were given a mass burial in Lapai Local Government.
The recurring accidents have heightened concerns about the road’s poor state, prompting calls for urgent repairs and enhanced safety measures to prevent further loss of life on this critical route.
