More than 100 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, pledging allegiance to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the leadership of Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu.
The mass defection took place on Sunday during the inauguration of the Renewed Hope Partners (RHP) in Obingwa Local Government Area of the state, which drew a large crowd of enthusiastic party supporters and community leaders.
In a statement signed by Levinus Nwabughiogu, Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker, Kalu welcomed the new members into the APC fold, commending their courage and foresight in joining a movement committed to rebuilding Nigeria and advancing the development of the South East region.
The defectors, led by former PDP State Secretary, Barr. Ibe Nwadioha, declared their full support for the APC and the Renewed Hope vision, emphasizing that the ruling party’s progressive agenda is resonating strongly across Abia State.
Nwadioha described his decision to join the APC as a “political turning point” for Obingwa, declaring that his move signals the collapse of other political parties in the area.
He said: “My entry into the APC marks the end of every other political party in Obingwa Local Government. It’s a historic moment, and the wind of change you have brought is sweeping through our communities like a hurricane. We will stand by Mr. President and support the APC.”
In recognition of his contributions to national development and his commitment to the South East, Obingwa APC stakeholders, including a former Federal Commissioner representing the South East at the National Pension Commission (PENCOM), Dr. Nyerere Chinenye Ayim, presented the Deputy Speaker with a traditional attire and a machete, symbols of honour, courage, and leadership.
The symbolic gesture reflected the people’s appreciation of Kalu’s visit and reaffirmed the growing influence of the Renewed Hope Partners initiative across Abia State.
