Deposed Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embaló arrived in Senegal on Thursday night after being released by the military junta that seized power earlier this week, Senegalese officials confirmed Friday.
The former army general, who has led the small West African nation since 2020, landed “safe and sound” in the Senegalese capital aboard a chartered military aircraft, according to a statement from Senegal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Embaló’s departure came after days of intense mediation by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which helped secure his release amid rising tensions in Bissau.
The latest coup is the most recent chapter in Guinea-Bissau’s turbulent post-independence history, marked by repeated military interventions and political instability since the country broke away from Portugal in 1974.
