Otto Addo leads Ghana to consecutive World Cup qualification

Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, have secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with coach Otto Addo making history as the first man to guide the team to back-to-back World Cup tournaments.

The Black Stars sealed their place at next year’s global showpiece with a 1-0 victory over Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday night.

Midfielder Mohammed Kudus scored the decisive goal in the first half to secure all three points for the four-time African champions in front of a packed home crowd. Ghana finished their qualifying campaign with 25 points, boasting eight wins, one draw, and one defeat, and a goal difference of +17.

Addo, who first led Ghana to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after edging Nigeria in the playoff, returned for a second spell as head coach in early 2024. Despite missing out on qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the Ghana Football Association kept faith in him, a decision that has now been richly rewarded.

With this achievement, Addo joins an elite list of Ghanaian coaches to have qualified the Black Stars for the World Cup, alongside Ratomir Dujković (2006), Milovan Rajevac (2010), and Kwesi Appiah (2014).

Ghana famously reached the Round of 16 in 2006 and the quarterfinals in 2010, but exited at the group stage in their last two appearances, including under Addo in 2022.

The coach has now set his sights on leading the team beyond those previous finishes when the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Ghana will be joined by Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia as Africa’s representatives at next year’s tournament.
