Osun LG election: PSM urges APC, PDP to embrace peace

1 day ago 30

As Osun state prepares for its local government election, the Progressive Students Movement (PSM) Nigeria Chapter has called on the leading political parties, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), to ensure a peaceful electoral process.

The appeal comes amid rising political tensions in the state, with reports of violence ahead of the polls.

In a statement released on Friday night, PSM’s National Director on Welfare and Political Engagements, Hon. Fawaz Awesu, condemned recent political killings, describing them as “unwarranted yet avoidable.”

He urged both parties to uphold democratic principles and respect the rule of law.

“We strongly frown at the unwarranted yet avoidable political killings in Osun State and implore both the APC and PDP to embrace peace, harmonious relationships, and adherence to due process,” Awesu said.

He emphasized that electoral popularity should be determined through the ballot rather than violence, calling for a transparent and credible election process.

PSM also commended security agencies for their swift response to tensions in the state and urged them to maintain neutrality in ensuring social justice and international best practices during the election.

The local government election is expected to be a significant test of political influence in Osun State, with both APC and PDP vying for dominance at the grassroots level.
