Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen will miss Nigeria’s pivotal 2026 World Cup qualifier against South Africa in Bloemfontein on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, after sustaining a shin injury during the team’s 1-0 victory over Rwanda on Saturday, September 6.
The news has dealt a significant blow to Nigeria’s hopes of closing the gap in Group A as they battle for a spot in the global tournament.
The 26-year-old Napoli forward, who started the match at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, was forced to leave the pitch in the 35th minute after a collision left him with a bruised shin.
Despite receiving treatment and attempting to continue, Osimhen was substituted for Cyril Dessers.
On Sunday, September 7, team officials confirmed that the injury would prevent him from traveling with the squad to South Africa.Promise Efoghe, the Super Eagles’ media officer, provided an update on Osimhen’s condition: “The team doctor has confirmed that Victor Osimhen sustained a shin bruise during the Rwanda match. He woke up this morning with discomfort and, unfortunately, will not be available for Tuesday’s game against South Africa.”
The injury comes at a critical juncture for Nigeria, who secured their first win in five Group A matches against Rwanda, boosting them to third place with 10 points after seven games.
South Africa, leading the group with 16 points, present a formidable challenge in the upcoming fixture, with only three matches left in the qualification campaign.
A victory is essential for Nigeria to keep their World Cup hopes alive.Head Coach Augustine Eguavoen expressed disappointment but remained optimistic about the team’s depth.
“Victor is a key player for us, but injuries are part of the game. We have capable players ready to step up, and we’ll approach the South Africa match with full commitment,” Eguavoen said during a press briefing.
The Super Eagles will now rely on players like Dessers, Victor Boniface, and Kelechi Iheanacho to fill the void in attack.
The team is scheduled to depart for Bloemfontein on Monday, September 8, to prepare for the high-stakes encounter.
With South Africa holding a strong position in the group, Nigeria’s chances of securing a direct qualification spot hinge on a positive result.
The Nigeria Football Federation has assured fans that Osimhen is receiving the best medical care and will be monitored closely ahead of the team’s next qualifier.
