Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has delivered a candid assessment of Nigeria’s World Cup playoff defeat to DR Congo, acknowledging the deep frustration felt across the country.
‘We are hurting just like Nigerians’
Speaking to British-Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana at Casablanca Airport after the loss in Rabat, Onyeka admitted the players fully share the nation’s disappointment.
“We, the players, are hurting just as much as Nigerians are hurting. Nigerians have every right to be very upset with us,” he said.
“It is very tough not to go to the next FIFA World Cup. Some of us may not be around in five years, in 2030. It’s painful.”

Focus shifts to AFCON
The Brentford midfielder stressed the need for quick emotional recovery, with another major assignment looming.
“We have an AFCON to play in 34 days and we need to get ready for that and do better than we did last time,” Onyeka added.
Nigeria’s campaign ends in heartbreak
Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup were dashed after a tense 1-1 draw with DR Congo in the playoff final in Rabat.
A dramatic penalty shootout saw the Super Eagles miss three spot-kicks, while the Leopards converted four to book their place in the next round and keep their World Cup dream alive.
