One Dead, Nine Injured In Shooting And Fire At Michigan Mormon Church

At least one person has been killed and nine others injured following a shooting and subsequent fire at a Mormon church in Michigan on Sunday morning, authorities have confirmed.

The incident occurred at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, a community located about 60 miles (96 km) northwest of Detroit. Police described it as an “active shooter” situation, adding that the suspect is “down,” though no details have yet been released on the individual’s identity or possible motive.

The Grand Blanc Township Police Department assured residents that there is no further threat to the public. Fire crews have since contained the blaze at the church.

US Attorney General Pam Bondi described the events as “a horrific shooting and fire” in a statement on X, noting that she had been briefed and that federal agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were en route to assist local authorities.

“Such violence at a place of worship is heartbreaking and chilling,” Bondi said. “Please join me in praying for the victims of this terrible tragedy.”

FBI Director Kash Patel echoed her sentiments, condemning the attack as “a cowardly and criminal act” and pledging federal support in the investigation.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer also issued a statement, stressing that “violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable,” and confirmed she was closely monitoring developments.

As of now, officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and fire, while the community of Grand Blanc grapples with the aftermath of yet another act of violence in a sacred space.
