The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has declared its full support for the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, urging him to remain focused on his mandate of driving key national infrastructure projects despite what it described as politically motivated attacks and distractions from detractors.

In a statement released in Abakaliki on Monday by its Deputy President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze commended Umahi’s performance and described recent criticisms against him as the handiwork of envious political actors unsettled by his achievements and close working relationship with President Bola Tinubu.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo stands firmly with Engr. Umahi and urges him to remain steadfast in his duties. Any attempt to discredit or undermine him will be viewed as an affront to the collective dignity and progress of the Igbo nation,” the statement read in part.

The group noted that Umahi’s appointment as Minister of Works marked a historic milestone, being the first Igbo to occupy the position in 74 years, and praised his introduction of cement technology in road construction, which it said had significantly improved infrastructure delivery across the country.

According to Ohanaeze, intelligence reports have indicated that some opposition elements are plotting to weaken the Tinubu administration by targeting its most effective ministers, with Umahi identified as one of the prime targets.

“Ohanaeze will continue to protect and defend the Minister of Works against political conspiracies and unjust criticism. His track record speaks for itself,” the statement added.

The organisation reaffirmed its support for President Tinubu’s government, commending it for what it described as a merit-based and inclusive approach to governance, and urged Umahi to stay the course in delivering projects that promote development across all regions, particularly the South-East.

Ohanaeze also recently criticised comments made by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and a broadcast journalist at Arise News, describing their remarks about Umahi as unprofessional and disrespectful.

It maintained that Umahi’s role in the current administration remains vital to Nigeria’s infrastructure renewal and the advancement of the South-East, calling on critics to allow him to concentrate on his national assignment of rebuilding the nation’s road network.
