Ogun: Tinubu flags off conference for senior police officers

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has flagged off a three-day conference and retreat for senior police officers, holding in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital. 

The conference, with the theme, ‘Improving Nigeria’s Internal Security and Economic Prosperity Through Inclusive Policing”, will hold between February 24 and 26, 2025.

Represented by the Vice President, Sen. Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu emphasised his administration’s commitments to strengthen the security architecture of the country, while ensuring a well equipped police force. 

“Our administration has prioritised strengthening our security agencies under operational capability, ensuring that they are well equipped to combat emergencies and effectively combat crime. 

“To this end, we are working to bridge distance security and infrastructural equipment task through a comprehensive and sustainable programme that includes renovating police barracks, improving mobility and upgrading essential combat. 

“This ongoing effort is complementing. Implementing the minimum wage is amongst the many steps we are taking to improve the Nigerian workers and the Nigerian Police.

“We will continue to collaborate with the police leadership to provide financial incentives to motivate officers and all security personnel to perform at their highest levels,” he said.

The Ogun state governor, Dapo Abiodun, in his remarks appreciated President Tinubu for his effort in advancing the wellbeing of the officers of security agencies in country, saying that security is the cornerstone of economic development. 

He therefore, stressed that collaboration is essential in combating crime, saying that security remains a topmost priority in the gateway state 

He assured that his administration will continue to strengthen and work with the law enforcement agencies, adding that the agency should remain to protect Nigerians and not oppress them. 

In his welcome address, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, said this year’s theme captures the essence of the police direction under his watch, adding that the conference will intend to create a police force that is well equipped, and professionally competent. 

“This year’s theme captures the essence of our strategic direction. It Mirrors President Bola Amend Tinubu’s security vision and underscores our determination to cultivate a police force that is professionally competent, intelligence-driven, and equipped to confront emerging threats proactively.

“Our nation continues to confront complex threats, including violent crimes, cyber-related offenses, terrorism, and transnational organized crimes. To effectively address these challenges, intelligence-led policing must remain at the core of our operations. 

“We are therefore committed to deepening strategic partnerships with both domestic and international security agencies while enhancing community engagement to bolster public trust and promote active citizen participation in policing”, he said.
