The Ogun State Government has raised alarm over the increasing number of diphtheria cases recorded in the state.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker, issued the warning on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, while addressing journalists in Abeokuta.
She explained that diphtheria, a bacterial infection, is highly contagious and can be transmitted from person to person through sneezing, coughing, or close contact.

Coker described the disease as dangerous if left untreated, stressing that it could lead to severe complications and even death.
She listed common symptoms of diphtheria to include sore throat, difficulty in breathing or swallowing, fever, a swollen neck, and a thick layer of grey or white coating in the throat or nose.
According to her, “To protect yourself, your family, and the community, we advise the following: Ensure vaccination diphtheria is preventable.
“Parents are strongly encouraged to ensure that children receive all recommended routine immunizations. Adults who missed their vaccines should also get protected.”
She further advised residents to maintain high standards of personal hygiene, wash hands regularly, and cover their mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing.
She also urged them to avoid close contact with infected persons and to report any symptoms to the nearest health facility rather than resorting to self-medication.
“Seek early treatment: Anyone who develops symptoms should report immediately to the nearest health facility. Do not self-medicate,” she warned.
The commissioner assured that the Ogun State Government, in partnership with developmental agencies, is intensifying efforts to safeguard residents from the disease outbreak.
