ONITSHA – Joy and excitement filled the air at Ogbogu Market, Bridge Head, Onitsha, Anambra State, as traders rolled out drums to celebrate the commissioning of a brand new 500KVA transformer — a project aimed at restoring steady power supply and energizing business activities within the bustling commercial hub.
The once electricity-starved market had suffered years of epileptic power due to the collapse of its old 300KVA transformer, leaving traders in darkness and forcing many to rely on expensive generators.
Speaking during the commissioning on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, the Special Adviser to Governor Charles Soludo on Trade and Market Affairs, Chief Everistus Uba, applauded the market leadership for what he described as a “self-help miracle,” noting that the new transformer would significantly improve business efficiency and customer satisfaction.“
“This transformer will guarantee constant electricity in the market, enabling traders to power their equipment and store temperature-sensitive goods,” Chief Uba stated. “It’s commendable that the market provided this, even when it should have been EEDC’s responsibility. You’ve shown true community leadership.”
In his remarks, the Caretaker Chairman of Ogbogu Market, Mr. Chukwuleta Ndubisi, said the project became a necessity due to the growing demand for stable electricity.“
“Our old transformer was obsolete and constantly breaking down,” he said. “With the support of our traders, we raised funds, rewired the entire market, and purchased this new 500KVA transformer to ensure uninterrupted power.”
Mr. Ndubisi highlighted a string of other achievements under his administration — from fixing the market’s water supply by drilling boreholes and installing overhead tanks, to building a befitting security office and providing modern toilet facilities for security operatives.
He also recalled the market’s week-long medical outreach, which deployed doctors, nurses, and lab scientists to provide free tests, treatments, and drugs to over 600 traders, describing it as one of the proudest accomplishments of his tenure.
Every festive season, the leadership also distributes over 200 bags of rice to former chairmen, market workers, and elderly traders — a gesture of unity and welfare.
Turning to governance, Mr. Ndubisi extolled Governor Soludo’s transformational leadership, citing the reconstruction of major roads around the market — including Niger Street, Silas Works, PH Road, and Zik’s Avenue — as proof of the governor’s commitment to grassroots development.o
Soludo is a performer,” he declared. “Those fighting his re-election are only after money, not service. We, the traders of Ogbogu Market, will stand solidly behind him in 2025.”
He recalled how the governor personally intervened earlier in the year when NAFDAC temporarily sealed the market, helping to resolve the crisis swiftly.W
“When we were in trouble, Soludo came to our rescue,” he said. “He is a true leader, and we’ll reward him with our votes.”
With lights blazing once again at Ogbogu Market, Onitsha’s commercial heart seems re-energized — a symbol of what community spirit and visionary leadership can achieve together.
