The three-time African champions needed two wins from two fixtures in September to keep their hopes alive.

After a narrow 1-0 victory against Rwanda in Uyo, Nigeria was held to a 1-1 draw in South Africa.

Following the draw in Bloemfontein, the NFF in a post-match report, pointed fingers at captain William Troost-Ekong and striker Cyriel Dessers.
