Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Tuesday reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring fair treatment of host communities by oil companies, while also emphasizing the importance of maintaining uninterrupted oil production in the state.
The Governor made these remarks during a courtesy visit from the management of Chevron Nigeria Limited at the Government House in Asaba.
Governor Oborevwori pointed out that a significant portion of the state’s revenue comes from oil production, and he expressed his desire to avoid any disruptions to this critical sector.
“If oil production increases, Delta State will benefit,” he noted, highlighting that the state currently leads the nation in oil production.
“I will not permit oil companies to mistreat their host communities, nor will I tolerate actions from host communities that disrupt oil production.
“Our economic well-being heavily relies on this industry, and any operation interruption will detrimentally affect our state,” he stated.
The Governor showed appreciation for Chevron Nigeria Limited’s ongoing contributions to the state’s economy and community development, commending the company’s management for their engagement with the state government.
“I have a long-standing relationship with Chevron, as I am a native of Warri. I hold the company in high regard,” Gov Oborevwori added.
“While many companies have departed from Warri, Chevron continues to thrive here, affirming that Warri is indeed a home for Chevron. That is why I consistently encourage collaboration between the company and the host communities.”
He acknowledged Chevron’s efforts in social responsibility but emphasized the need for further assistance, saying, “Our communities have pressing needs, and you have assured us of your willingness to do more. My agenda is centered on MORE for Deltans.”
The Governor also recalled a recent meeting with leaders of the Itsekiri Nation, where issues surrounding electricity and water quality were discussed.
He mentioned ongoing efforts to address water concerns and encouraged Chevron to contribute further.
“Recently, community members threatened to protest. I intervened because I believe in dialogue. It’s crucial for you to listen to these individuals. They are not unfamiliar to you, given your long-standing presence in the area,” he explained.
He noted a recent incident where community members occupied Chevron’s administration office in Ekpan and emphasized the role played by his administration to resolve the issue peacefully.
“Engaging with the community and understanding their concerns is vital. When job opportunities arise, prioritize hiring from among them, as they are your host communities,” he stressed.
“We want to see more of our people in significant management roles rather than just as temporary staff.”
Governor Oborevwori invited potential investors to take advantage of Delta State’s conducive business environment, assuring them that the region is secure for investment.
Earlier, the Chairman and Managing Director of Chevron Nigeria Limited, Jim Swartz, expressed gratitude for the mutually beneficial relationship with Delta State.
He reaffirmed Chevron’s commitment to maintaining and strengthening this partnership.
“Chevron has been operating in Nigeria for over sixty years, largely in collaboration with Delta State.
“We have significant contributions to the state’s welfare and a considerable presence here,” Swartz said, noting that Escravos is the center of their operations.
“We are proud of our reputation for timely tax payments and the projects we have initiated, including healthcare facilities, educational improvements, and infrastructure developments.
“These projects exemplify how businesses and communities can work together for mutual benefit,” he concluded.
