Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has advised the newly installed 44th Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Abdul-Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja, to maintain a clear distinction between traditional rulership and politics, emphasizing that the revered throne demands humility, patience, and divine wisdom.
In a congratulatory letter dated July 14, 2025, and released through his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo extended royal salutations to the monarch, praying in Yoruba, “Ade a pe lori, bata a pe lese” (“May your crown endure and your shoes last long”).
Currently attending the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, Obasanjo described Oba Ladoja’s upcoming formal coronation on Friday in Ibadan as a ceremonial milestone following his earlier ascension announcement.
“Being the traditional ruler of all Ibadan people is an exalted and responsible position,” Obasanjo wrote.
“It requires humility, patience, divine wisdom, tolerance, and advice from wide and varied quarters to succeed.
Traditional rulership does not compete or conflict with political rulership.”Obasanjo’s counsel reflects the delicate balance traditional leaders navigate in Nigeria, where cultural roles often intersect with political dynamics.
Oba Ladoja, a former Oyo State governor and prominent political figure, brings a unique perspective to the throne, making the former president’s call for neutrality particularly poignant.
“I wish you all the best and the grace, guidance, and direction of Almighty God,” Obasanjo added, expressing optimism for a reign that upholds Ibadan’s storied heritage.
As the ancient city prepares for the coronation, the event is expected to draw dignitaries, traditional leaders, and residents to celebrate the 44th Olubadan, whose ascension follows a lineage steeped in cultural significance.
Ibadan, one of Nigeria’s largest cities and a cultural hub of the Yoruba people, looks to Oba Ladoja to foster unity and progress.
