“Obasanjo Lied About Not Planning Third Term Bid, Ex-President Bush Helped Nigeria To Stop Him” — Orji Kalu

Former Abia North Senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, has accused ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo of lying about his alleged third term agenda.

Kalu, who spoke on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, said the former president personally informed him of his intention to seek a third term while in office.

Obasanjo had earlier denied ever planning to extend his tenure beyond 2007.

He made the denial on Tuesday during the 2025 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Annual Democracy Dialogue held in Accra, Ghana.

During the event, Obasanjo insisted that he never sought a third term in office and compared his achievement in securing debt relief for Nigeria to be a far more challenging task.

Reacting to Obasanjo’s comments, Kalu said the former president was being dishonest about what transpired during his administration.

He maintained that Obasanjo personally confided in him about his plans for a third term but was stopped through collective efforts.

“What Obasanjo said in Ghana, that he never wanted a third term, was a lie,” Kalu stated on Wednesday.

“He called me to the Villa and told me he wanted a third term, and I told him no. That’s why he started having issues with me. We stopped him with the help of former US President Bush.”

The former Abia State governor said Obasanjo’s denial was a clear attempt to rewrite history, stressing that Nigerians were aware of how the alleged third term move divided the National Assembly at the time.

Kalu reiterated that the plan failed because prominent political figures, including himself, opposed it and stood for constitutional democracy.
