Prof. Siyan Oyeweso, the Pro-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has died.

The renowned History professor from Ede, Osun State, was said to have passed away after a brief illness.

The news of his death was confirmed on Tuesday by Olalekan Badmus, Special Assistant on Digital Media to Governor Ademola Adeleke, in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter).

Badmus described Prof. Oyeweso’s passing as shocking and painful, noting that it was a major loss to both the academic and political circles in Osun State.

“Rest in power, Prof. Siyan Oyeweso. An illustrious son of Ede, Osun State, and Nigeria. What a sad loss!” he wrote.

Prof. Oyeweso was widely respected for his impactful contributions to education and scholarship, as well as his active involvement in Osun State politics, where he was considered an influential figure within the All Progressives Congress (APC).

His death has continued to attract tributes from academics, political leaders, and associates across the state and beyond.
