NYCN cautions youths against October 20 protest, cites security threats

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has called on Nigerian youths to shun the planned protest scheduled for October 20, 2025, warning that it could lead to a breakdown of law and order and endanger lives and property.

In a statement issued on Saturday by its Interim Management Committee Chairman, Barr. Buhari Shehu, the Council revealed that the federal government, through the Nigerian Police Force, has obtained a Federal High Court order restraining the organizers from holding the protest.

According to the NYCN, credible intelligence and recent developments indicate potential security threats surrounding the planned demonstration.

The group also referenced a security advisory by the United States Embassy in Abuja, which urged its citizens to avoid the protest areas due to safety concerns.

“We urge all Nigerian youths to exercise restraint and stay out of trouble,” the statement read.

“The planned protest may lead to chaos, putting innocent lives and property at risk. We must not allow our grievances to be hijacked or exploited to destabilize our nation,” it added.

While acknowledging the right of young people to express themselves, the Council appealed for peaceful and lawful alternatives to make their voices heard, emphasizing the importance of maintaining national stability amid current socio-economic challenges.

Barr. Shehu reaffirmed the NYCN’s commitment to advancing youth welfare, peace, and development through constructive dialogue and collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

“We have no other country than Nigeria,” he added. “At this critical time, we must come together to safeguard our dear nation and promote unity, peace, and progress.”

The NYCN concluded by advising youths to remain calm, stay informed, and avoid any activity that could compromise national security or the safety of citizens.
