The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, has congratulated Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo on his re-election, urging him to use his second term to implement more media-friendly policies and strengthen the welfare and professional environment of journalists in the state.
This formed part of a 13-point communiqué issued after the Union’s November 2025 Congress held at the Godwin Ezeemo International Press Centre, Awka, and presided over by the State Chairman, Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, PhD.
The Union while commending the Soludo administration for providing free high-speed fibre Internet at the NUJ Secretariat through the Anambra State ICT Agency, led by Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata (CFA), noted that the facility has improved journalistic work, especially during Congress sessions.
It expressed satisfaction with the performance of the newly installed fibre link and acknowledged the wider statewide fibre-optic rollout being driven by the ICT Agency. It said the initiative aligns with the state’s digital transformation agenda and is helping to expand digital access across communities.
The Union further praised the state government for waiving Right of Way (RoW) charges, describing the policy as instrumental in accelerating broadband expansion and improving digital services for journalists, students, businesses and residents.
NUJ appreciated its members for their professional conduct during the November 8 governorship election, noting that their responsible coverage protected the integrity of the journalism profession.
The Union also drew attention to six years of unpaid pension arrears for retirees of the defunct Anambra Newspaper and Printing Corporation, National Light and appealed to Governor Soludo to intervene.
It equally raised concerns over rising phone addiction among students and urged parents to guide their children to prioritise academic work while also reminding residents to clear grasses and remove inflammable materials ahead of the harmattan season to prevent fire outbreaks.
Similarly, members appreciated the presence of 88-year-old veteran journalist, Chief Hon. Odogwu Odoemenem who was in attendance, and prayed for his continued good health.
The Congress while passing a vote of confidence on the Dr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu-led executive for its performance and commended the leadership for inviting veteran journalists to mentor younger colleagues also extended birthday and marriage anniversary wishes to Prof. Chinyere Stella Okunna, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Paul University, who was celebrated during the meeting.
