NPFL Slams Katsina United with N9m Fine, Over Fan Violence in Barau FC Clash

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) board has imposed a total fine of N9 million on Katsina United for multiple security and conduct violations during their 1-1 draw against Barau FC at Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina on Saturday.

Barau FC’s director of media operations, Ahmad Gwale, alleged that player Nana Abraham was stabbed in the neck by a pitch invader, describing the attacker as “one person from the Katsina United bench or one of their fans” who used “something like a sharp object.”

Katsina United rejected the claim, insisting none of their supporters invaded the pitch or assaulted the player.

In its Sunday ruling, the NPFL stated that Katsina United “failed to ensure proper conduct of their supporters, leading to the harassment of Barau FC players and match officials.”

The league highlighted that home fans threw harmful objects onto the pitch, causing injuries to visiting players.

The fines break down as follows: N1 million each for throwing objects toward the pitch, failing to control supporters, and bringing the game into disrepute, totaling N3 million.

An additional N2 million was levied for inadequate security provisions.Katsina United must also pay N2 million each as compensation for medical treatment of injured Barau FC players, damages to the away team’s buses, and for detaining match officials and the visiting team for hours post-match totaling N4 million.

As further sanction, the club is ordered to play all remaining home matches at the stadium in Jos behind closed doors.
