Barau FC has confirmed that its player, Nana Abraham, was stabbed in the neck by a pitch invader during Saturday’s Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) match against Katsina United at Muhammadu Dikko Stadium.
The incident occurred shortly after Barau FC equalized in the 69th minute to make it 1-1.
Speaking to TheCable, the club’s media operations director, Ahmad Gwale, said the attacker, identified as either a Katsina United bench member or a fan, stormed the pitch and struck Abraham with a sharp object.
Viral images on social media show the injured player on the ground in visible pain, with blood around his neck.
The match was briefly suspended but resumed after Abraham was substituted. He is currently receiving medical treatment.
The attack comes months after Plateau United striker Vincent Temitope was stabbed in the neck by a fan during a game at Lafia City Stadium in Nasarawa.
