The Joint Action Committee of Northern Youth Associations (JACON) has condemned the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) decision to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, labeling it as unfair, undemocratic, and a betrayal of the North’s longstanding support for the party.
Speaking at a press conference in Kaduna on Tuesday, JACON warned that the zoning decision could severely damage the PDP’s prospects in the upcoming elections.
The group highlighted that the North, a key pillar of the PDP’s success since 1999, has only held the presidency for two and a half years, while the South controlled it for thirteen and a half years during the party’s 16-year rule.
“The North was clearly shortchanged during PDP’s tenure. The South held the presidency for over a decade, while the North got barely two and a half years. Zoning the ticket back to the South in 2027 is a calculated move to marginalize our region,” JACON stated.
The group demanded that the PDP allocate its 2027 ticket to the North, arguing that equity and fairness require the region to complete its rightful share of leadership.
“The North will not remain a mere vote bank for a party that denies it leadership. If this injustice persists, we will mobilize our structures to respond at the polls,” the statement read.
JACON announced plans for an emergency meeting of its affiliate bodies to devise a strategy to oppose the PDP’s zoning decision.
The group also urged Northern political, traditional, and religious leaders to reject what it called “a blatant act of exclusion,” emphasizing that “the era of passive acceptance is over.”
The statement was signed by Ambassador Sanin Yaya, JACON’s Director of Media and Public Affairs.
