The North-Central All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum has called on President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly to resist mounting pressure for the creation of state police in Nigeria.

The appeal came in response to Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s renewed advocacy for state policing during a special court session in Jos to mark the commencement of the 2025/2026 legal year.

Mutfwang argued that establishing state police was necessary to tackle insecurity in Plateau and other parts of the country.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, the Forum’s chairman and member of the APC Campaign Council in the 2023 elections, Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, warned that the creation of state police could be risky and counterproductive.

According to VANGUARD, the Forum expressed concern that state police might be misused by state authorities, deepen the marginalization of minority groups, and heighten the risk of political repression in some states.

It further cautioned that in secular and religiously diverse regions such as the North-Central, the implementation of state policing — if mishandled — could adversely affect minority faiths and cultural practices.

Describing the proposal as a “dangerous path,” the Forum warned that it could undermine democratic norms, criminalize dissent, and threaten national unity. It urged President Tinubu, lawmakers, civil society organizations, and Nigerians at large to reject the idea.

“We therefore call on President Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly, civil society organizations, and Nigerians at large to resist this move, as it could undermine democratic norms, criminalize dissent, and threaten national unity.”
