Normalcy returns to Kano community as police probe mosque killing

Normalcy has been restored in Maraba Quarters, Kano, following a tragic incident at the Yusuf Garko Mosque that left two persons dead, as the Kano State Police Command has launched a full investigation into the case of culpable homicide.

The police confirmed that the incident occurred on Monday, December 15, 2025, when a male resident of the area, identified as Ladan Malam Zubairu, was attacked and killed within the mosque premises by an unidentified individual.

According to eyewitness accounts, the suspect attempted to escape after the incident but was pursued by an angry crowd. The suspect was later killed by the mob, while his residence was reportedly set on fire, resulting in the destruction of property in the neighborhood.

Police intervention, however, helped to prevent further escalation. Security operatives were swiftly deployed to the area, successfully containing the situation and restoring calm.

Investigators disclosed that evidence linking the suspect to the crime was recovered during a search. Both the victim and the suspect were taken to the Mohammed Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital, where they were confirmed dead and their bodies deposited for autopsy.

Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, commissioner of Police, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident. The probe will cover both the killing at the mosque and the subsequent mob action, with a view to ensuring that all those found responsible are brought to justice.

The police command appealed to residents to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands, warning that mob justice undermines the rule of law and worsens already tragic situations.

Members of the public were also urged to cooperate with law enforcement by providing useful information to aid the investigation, with assurances that all information would be treated confidentially.

The command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property across Kano State and called on community members to support efforts to maintain peace and security.
