Nordica Fibroid Care Centre to commence HIFU treatment in Abuja

The Fibroid Care Centre of the Nordica Fertility Centre will commence High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) treatment for fibroids  in Abuja from July 1, the chief executive officer of the centre , Dr Abayomi Ajayi, has said.

He said this during a news briefing and fibroid seminar in Abuja.

HIFU is a form of treatment that converts waves of ultrasound energy to heat to burn off fibroids.

He said the centre was launching the treatment at its centre in Abuja following a successful treatment of 425 patients in Lagos since it was launched there in 2021.

Dr Ajayi said the treatment option saved patients from complications associated with surgery and other methods.

He said, “Unlike traditional methods, HIFU targets and destroys fibroid tissue without removing it, reducing the risk of complications.”

Maryanne who underwent HIFU fibroid treatment, said her periods were always accompanied with serious pains as a result of fibroids for over a decade.

 She added that doing HIFU September last year changed her situation as she no longer feels pain.

 She added that she no longer needs to stay away from work as she used to do before following the treatment.

Comfort Okpega, another lady who was treated for fibroid with HIFU , said suffering heavy flow,  and infertility led her to do HIFU.  She added that incidents of women who died from fibroid surgery and those who had gone for surgery multiple times also made her go for HIFU treatment.

“Since I went for the HIFU treatment in October last year, I no longer feel the heavy flow and pains that come from fibroid,” she added.

Explaining how the HIFU machine works, Dr Bakut John Maiganga, said, “the HIFU machine generates sound waves, which focuses on a particular area at a specific intensity and power; and the generated thermal energy kills the fibroids.”
