Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has issued a stern warning to local authorities against collecting taxes or levies from petty traders in the state.
The statement was made on Saturday, while addressing supporters during a rally at Ekwulọbịa, Aguata Local Government Area.
The governor’s directive comes after a visit to Eke Market in Awgbu, where he observed that levies were still being collected from traders with less than N100,000 in capital, contrary to government policy.

Soludo said, “Don’t collect from them anymore. We will arrest anybody that goes ahead to disregard this. Our government is committed to protecting the livelihoods of petty traders.”
He further stated, “Our focus is on creating an enabling environment for small businesses.
“Traders are the backbone of our local economy, and we cannot allow policies to oppress them.
“Every petty trader should feel secure and supported by the government.”
Soludo had previously, two years ago, abolished the collection of taxes from traders with wares worth less than N100,000.
He also removed all forms of levies on barrow pushers, hawkers, vulcanizers, and other small-scale operators to ease their financial burden and promote economic inclusivity.
During the rally, the governor also expressed appreciation for the support he has received from the community.
He commended the Ekwulọbịa residents for their resilience and active engagement with his administration, highlighting the importance of community participation in governance.
“Your commitment and collaboration inspire us to do more,” he said.
In a show of solidarity, a cheque of N80 million, contributed by prominent sons of Ekwulọbịa, was presented to Governor Soludo and his deputy, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, to support their campaign efforts.
The gesture underscored the community’s commitment to backing government initiatives and fostering socio-economic development in the region.
Governor Soludo concluded, “We will continue to protect the vulnerable and ensure fair economic practices.
“No petty trader should be denied their livelihood under my watch.”
His warning reinforces his administration’s stance on protecting the livelihoods of petty traders, ensuring compliance with directives, and promoting equitable economic policies across Anambra State.
