Nnamdi Kanu Writes DSS, Seeks Urgent Hospital Admission Over Worsening Health

The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has written to the Department of State Services (DSS) requesting immediate medical attention due to his deteriorating health condition while in custody.

According to Sahara reporters, the request was contained in a letter dated September 23, 2025, and signed by his Special Counsel, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor. The letter was addressed to the Director-General of the DSS, raising concerns over the worsening state of Kanu’s health.

Titled “Re: Request For Your Urgent Approval Of Hospital For The Admission Of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” the letter urged the security agency to allow the IPOB leader’s prompt admission to a hospital.

“With reference to the latest medical evaluation of Mazi Kanu by your team of physicians (in the presence of his brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu), we hereby seek your kind and urgent approval of the hospital selected for the prompt admission and further management of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s health,” part of the letter obtained by SaharaReporters read.

According to the letter, the preferred hospital is Clover Hospital, located at No. 11 Agadez Crescent, Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, under the care of Dr. Michael Eze.

“Due to the urgency of the situation, the hospital has kindly scheduled to receive Mazi Kanu as soon as practicable between today and tomorrow. Your kind cooperation in this regard will be highly appreciated,” the letter added.

On Tuesday, September 23, SaharaReporters had reported that IPOB raised concerns over Kanu’s worsening health, accusing the Nigerian government and the DSS of deliberately endangering his life through inadequate medical care and prolonged detention.

The pro-Biafra group warned that the situation had reached a breaking point, stressing that “any further deterioration” could trigger a major crisis with serious consequences for Nigeria and the wider West African region.

In its statement, IPOB compared Nigeria’s continued detention of Kanu to historical global flashpoints, including the events that preceded the First World War, warning that his continued incarceration risked plunging the South-East into chaos.

The separatist group further maintained that Kanu’s extraordinary rendition from Kenya in 2021 violated international law, describing his ongoing detention as a provocation.

IPOB also accused the British government of complicity, alleging that London’s “neo-colonial interests” had emboldened Nigerian authorities to persist in keeping Kanu in custody despite his failing health.
