The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has declared that the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, who is facing terrorism charges, is not suffering from any life-threatening ailment that would prevent him from standing trial.
The NMA report, read in open court by the prosecution counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), stated that Kanu’s medical condition was stable and did not pose a risk to his participation in court proceedings.
Justice James Omotosho had on September 26 directed the NMA to nominate eight to ten medical experts in cardiology and neurology to examine Kanu, who had complained of severe health issues. The judge ordered that the assessment be completed within eight days.

The medical team was also mandated to inspect the medical facilities at the Department of State Services (DSS) to determine their adequacy in managing Kanu’s condition.
Following the submission of the report, the court proceeded to hear Kanu’s no-case submission application.
Earlier, Kanu’s legal team, led by Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), had presented a report by Professor Martin Aghaji recommending that Kanu be transferred to the National Hospital, Abuja, for treatment over a heart-related ailment and low potassium levels.
However, the DSS medical team, led by Dr. Mohammed Nasir, countered the claim, insisting that the report was exaggerated and that the service’s medical facility was capable of managing Kanu’s health.
Similarly, the DSS’s lead counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), urged the court to reject the request for Kanu’s transfer to the National Hospital.
The case has been adjourned until October 23 for trial.
