Arase, who was appointed the 18th Inspector-General of Police in April 2015, had an illustrious career.

Before becoming IGP, he headed the Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau, the force’s top intelligence unit.

Following his retirement, he went on to serve as Chairman of the Police Service Commission and was also a member of the Body of Benchers, where he continued contributing to national service.

Describing him as a patriot, the family noted that he “served the country with distinction” and requested prayers and support from Nigerians during this period of mourning.

Meanwhile, the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, disclosed to news men that the police authorities were preparing an official response.

“We are working on a statement. You will get it shortly,” he said on Sunday.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
