Nigerian Student Crowned ‘Top in World’ in Cambridge IGCSE English Exam

Kenechukwu Oluwanifemi Uba, a talented student from Caleb International College in Magodo, Lagos, has been named the “Top in World” candidate in the November 2024 Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) English as a Second Language (Speaking Endorsement) examination.

The prestigious Outstanding Cambridge Learner Award recognizes Uba’s outstanding performance in the speaking component of the exam, placing her at the pinnacle among thousands of candidates worldwide.

This endorsement shows her exceptional proficiency in English communication skills, a critical area for non-native speakers pursuing international qualifications.

Caleb International College, known for its rigorous academic standards and commitment to holistic student development, expressed immense pride in Uba’s accomplishment.

The school’s administration celebrated the feat as a testament to the dedication of its educators and the hard work of its pupils. “We are thrilled and honored by Kenechukwu’s global recognition.

This victory not only elevates our institution but also inspires our entire community to strive for excellence,” a school spokesperson stated in a recent announcement.

The Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language syllabus is designed to build practical communication skills for everyday use, focusing on reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Uba’s success in the speaking endorsement, which does not contribute to the overall written grade but highlights oral proficiency, demonstrates her ability to engage effectively in English-medium environments.

This award is part of Cambridge International’s broader recognition program, which honors top performers across various subjects and regions.

With results for the November 2024 series released earlier this month, Cambridge reported a record-breaking 10% increase in entries for IGCSE exams, totaling over 273,000 from schools in 137 countries.

This growth reflects the rising demand for internationally recognized qualifications that prepare students for higher education and global careers.

Uba’s achievement stands out amid this surge, particularly in a subject like English as a Second Language, which is vital for students from diverse linguistic backgrounds.Uba’s triumph adds to Nigeria’s growing list of successes in Cambridge examinations, following similar awards won by six Nigerian students in the 2023 series.
