Nigerian Senate Will Not Tolerate Disruptive Members

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has vowed that no member of the National Assembly will be allowed to hold the Senate hostage through disruptive conduct.

Akpabio made the declaration on Saturday, in a statement issued by his media aide, Eseme Eyiboh, titled “The Trials and Triumphs of a Resilient Nigeria’s 10th Senate.”

He emphasized that the enforcement of parliamentary rules is not to silence dissenting voices but to preserve the sanctity of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

According to him, “The Senate cannot and will not be held hostage by the disruptive instincts of any of its members.

“Democracy thrives only when its institutions are respected and its rules upheld.”

Although he did not name any lawmaker, his remarks came amid renewed controversy surrounding Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central), who recently returned from a six-month suspension.

Akpabio stressed that discipline and order are vital to legislative integrity.

He said, “The discipline of parliamentary conduct is a universal marker of political civilisation.

“In the United Kingdom’s House of Commons, the authority of the Speaker is absolute and unchallenged.”

He further defended the Senate’s right to discipline erring members, noting that similar measures exist in other advanced democracies.

“Members who flout rules face swift consequences. In the British House of Commons, suspension or expulsion is not rare when a member’s behaviour undermines parliamentary dignity,” he stated.

Describing the 10th Senate as “a chamber of resilience and balance,” Akpabio said the legislature’s focus remains on stability and respect for due process, insisting that “freedom within order is the truest form of democracy.”
