1. A total of 215 pupils and 12 teachers were abducted by the bandits who stormed St. Mary’s Catholic School, Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State, in the wee hours of Friday. The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN in Niger State confirmed this hours after the attack.
2. The Federal Government has shut down 47 Unity Colleges across the country. In a circular issued to principals, on Friday, Hajia Binta Abdulkadir, Director of Senior Secondary Education in the Ministry of Education, said Dr Tunji Alausa, the Minister, had approved the temporary closure of 47 schools due to recent security challenges in some parts of the country.
3. The Department of State Services has moved leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, to the Nigerian Custodial Centre in Sokoto. This follows his conviction and sentencing for terrorism. On Friday, Kanu’s legal consultant, Aloy Ejimakor, announced the relocation of Kanu.
4. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has canceled his planned trip to the G20 Leaders’ Summit In South Africa. Consequently, the President has delegated Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent him at the meeting. This was disclosed by Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of The Vice President.
5. Several persons were feared dead on Friday night after a gas explosion rocked the Bioku-Alaadun area in Ibadan, Ona Ara Local Government Area of Oyo State. It was gathered that the explosion reportedly occurred while a tanker was discharging gas into a retail outlet. The casualties were said to include the owner of the gas shop and others who were nearby at the time of the incident.
6. Four suspected robbers have been shot dead in a gun duel with operatives of the CP-Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT) of the Delta State Police Command. This was contained in a signed statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe, copies of which were made available to journalists in Warri on Friday.
7. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Kano State Strategic Command, has arrested no fewer than 230 suspects involved in various drug-related offences and seized large quantities of illicit substances in the state. The Commander of the NDLEA Kano Strategic Command, Abubakar Ahmad, made this known while briefing newsmen in Kano on Friday.
8. The Managing Director of the Hadejia‑Jam’are River Basin Development Authority, Alhaji Rabiu Bichi, on Friday received 774 former members of the New Nigeria People’s Party, who have defected to the All Progressives Congress in Rimin Gado Local Government Area. Speaking at the reception, Bichi described the defectors as “lucky” for making what he called the right political decision.
9. The Police Command in Kwara has arrested a man from Makurdi accused of repairing and supplying guns to bandits operating in the state. The command also confirmed the arrest of several suspects alleged to be supplying food, drugs and other essentials to bandits in remote hideouts.
10. Former President Goodluck Jonathan has blamed the underdevelopment of the Niger Delta on weak political will and the personal ambition of some political office holders. Jonathan, who spoke in Abuja on Friday at the launch of The Hidden Treasures, a 202-page book written by former Delta State governorship aspirant Chris Iyovwaye, stated that political rivalry and the scramble for power have repeatedly stalled progress in the region.
